How It Works
From drop-off to delivery — here's what happens with your tapes
Every conversion starts with a conversation and ends with files you can actually use on the devices you own. In between, your tapes go through a careful, preservation-focused workflow designed to get as much as possible out of the original recording — not just make it digital, but make it last.
The Process, Step by Step
Why This Approach Is Different
Most consumer videotape converters — including popular USB capture devices — record the video signal after the deck has already processed it. That's convenient, but it discards information that can never be recovered later. Here's what a preservation-focused workflow does differently.
More Signal Preserved
By capturing directly from the tape heads, the full raw signal is retained for software decoding. Consumer USB capture devices and simple composite outputs record what the deck's circuitry has already compressed and filtered — with no way to undo any of that processing after the fact.
Live Monitoring During Capture
Signal strength and quality are measured continuously throughout every capture session. If something goes wrong — a weak signal, unexpected dropouts, or the tape ending early — it's caught in real time rather than discovered when reviewing a finished file that can't be re-done.
Archival-Grade Audio
Audio is captured as an independent lossless recording rather than being mixed into the video stream. This keeps the signal path clean and ensures audio quality is never compromised by preview monitoring or consumer-grade encoding decisions made during capture.
What You'll Receive
Every order includes organized files ready to use on the devices you already own — no technical knowledge required.
Full-Length Masters
One complete digital file per tape — the full transfer at full quality, organized by tape label or recording date.
Clips & Highlights
Shorter clips and shareable highlights created during the editing step — ideal for sending to family or sharing on social media. Included with every conversion.
Organized & Named
Files are named clearly and grouped by source tape, so you can find any recording without sorting through a folder full of unnamed clips.
